Is the FBI Spying on You?

The MCLU has launched an investigation to ensure that the FBI is not wasting its time and taxpayer dollars by spying on peace and justice activists in Maine. As a first step, the MCLU has filed a Freedom of Information Act Request with the FBI and the Department of Justice to find out what's happening here at home in Maine. Materials obtained by the national office of the ACLU and affiliates in other states suggest that since September 11, the FBI has engaged in the regrettable practice of placing individuals and groups under surveillance on the basis of their politics.

We think Mainers deserve to know who is being investigated and why. The MCLU's clients comprise a Who's Who of Maine advocates for well-known causes, including the environment, religion, fair trade, grassroots politics, peace, social justice, nuclear disarmament, human rights and civil liberties. Requests were filed on behalf of seven groups and fifteen individuals across the state. Our job as Maine's civil liberties watchdog is to ensure that their right to speak their mind is protected.
