Maine Civil Liberties Union Spring and Summer Internships

Reports to:

  1. Field Organizer

SUMMARY:  The intern supports the Field Organizer, Development Assistant, and Assistant to the Directors in all activities fulfilling the MCLU mission, while gaining experience in legal issues as they pertain to civil liberties and the functioning of a non-profit organization.  Ability to complete work independently, and strong research skills are essential.

 

Essential Duties and responsibilities:

  1. Member outreach
    1. Making phone calls to advertise events
    2.  Maintaining accurate member contact information
  2. Keep accurate files of contact information for all volunteers
  3. Maintain Coalition relationships
    1. Attend other non-profit organization meetings
    2. Research other non-profit organizations whose missions align with our issue areas
  4. Media Updates
    1. Read state, national, and international news for relevant stories to use in action alerts and the newsletters.
    2. Archive old press releases
  5. Development
    1. Filing
    2. Data entry
    3. Mailings
    4. Organizing development materials
    5. Grant research
  6. General Office
    1. Assist with daily operations (answering phones, processing intake forms, filing, etc)

               
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Some college; strong managerial skills; strong organizational skills; ability to work between 10 and 20 hours a week, Monday through Friday, with the possibility of some weekend events

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  1. Knowledge of MCLU issues and work
  2. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  3. Ability to supervise and train volunteers, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  4. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  5. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate activities and special events.
  6. Knowledge of computer software programs including but not limited to Excel and Word

 

COMPENSATION:
This is an unpaid position.
